ABOUT OUR PICTURE FRAMES
We are proud to feature a wide variety of picture frames suitable for all framing needs. On this website you will find everything from replicas of Renaissance classics to picture frames designed with contemporary sensibilities in mind. All of our frames are made from quality picture framing material and have a wood base. In this section we discuss some of our more popular picture frame styles in the hopes that the discussion will be both informative and provide a useful frame of reference for prospective purchasers.
Plein Air Picture Frames
The term "plein air" is a French expression for “open air” often used to describe the practice of painting outdoors. This practice gained popularity during the late 1800’s as a result of the impressionist painter’s emphasis on working with natural light and the introduction of tube paints that could be used outside without drying up. The impressionist painters who took to the hills and the fields to capture nature were hence referred to as plein air painters. In contrast to their European counterparts who typically used elaborate frames, the American plein air painters preferred simple wide gold frames with a relatively small degree of low relief carving. Heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement, frames bearing these classic American designs have come to be known as plein air picture frames. We offer one of the largest selections of American plein air picture frames available anywhere.
Ornate Gold Picture Frames
The gold ornate frame has been a standard in picture framing for centuries. Originally, frames were made gold in part because gold glows in low light, allowing frames to stand out in dimly lit rooms before electricity. Over time the ornate gold frame became the frame of choice for serious artwork as attested to by the dominance of ornate gold frames in the world’s great museums. We also offer a large selection of ornate gold frames, many of which are copies of classic period designs and/or inspired by such designs.
Our Other Picture Frames
In addition to plein air picture frames and ornate gold picture frames, we offer a host of other frames. Many designs available in gold are also available in silver, black and wood tones. We offer frames inspired by various periods, cultures, movements and countries including art deco and art nouveau frames, rustic frames, craftsman frames, fine wood frames, Arts & Crafts frames, modern frames, traditional frames, Hudson River School frames, baroque frames, roccoco frames, European frames, Asian and Oriental frames...and the list goes on!
